Background and Research

Key Facts & Policy Issues:
Between 1993 and 2008, 83,000 Big Three auto manufacturing jobs were lost.

Of the 10 states with the highest per capita income, an average of 32% of residents age 25-64 hold bachelor’s degrees or more; in Ohio, the number is only 25%.

At present, about 40% of the land in the Upper Midwest is used either for agriculture or livestock.

A study by Michigan Future, Inc. concluded that across the United States, “the largest metropolitan areas not only have the highest proportion of households with incomes of $75,000 or more, but also the smallest proportion of households with incomes under $25,000.”  These city-centers focus on knowledge-based industries and attract college-educated adults.

According to New United Van Lines Data, Great Lakes states show an outward bound trend of migration, with Ohio and Indiana at 57% and Michigan at 68%.
